The impact of AI on the law
Marc Bonnant shares his vision of artificial intelligence and the future of the legal profession.
In the first episode of Code to Code, the Silex podcast exploring the intersection of legal language and machine code, Kyriaki Bongard hosts Marc Bonnant, former President of the Geneva Bar, who was named the best living French-speaking orator in 2016. The conversation spans from the essence of advocacy to the forces transforming it: why has the legal profession become denser and more technical, and what place does eloquence hold when clients expect answers that are as fast as they are precise? Marc Bonnant then turns his attention directly to artificial intelligence, what a machine will never grasp about legal reasoning, and what remains inevitably human in the pursuit of justice.
Marc Bonnant then turns his attention directly to artificial intelligence, what a machine will never grasp about legal reasoning, and what remains inevitably human in the pursuit of justice. A measured and clear-eyed perspective from a practitioner who has witnessed the transformation of his profession from the inside and reflected deeply on what should not change.
I believe that the judges of tomorrow will be robots. I believe that the prosecution will be a robot, as will the civil party. And, fundamentally, there will be only one human left in the courtroom. That is the person being judged or—purely hypothetically—acquitted. And I believe the lawyer's reason for being is to stand by the side of that last human.
